Care for the Elderly

mavis_driverMy name is Mavis Driver and I am the Lay Pastoral Assistant for Older People at St Andrew’s Church.

My role is to keep in touch with and visit (mainly) elderly members of St Andrew’s who cannot now get to church but for whom the church is still a very important part of their lives. I do home visits where necessary and also visit people in Residential or Care Homes. I also try and visit the Day Centre on a Friday. These visits provide opportunities for reminiscing and listening to ‘their’ stories. Sometimes this is all that a person needs—to talk about their life and tell about their young days and recall people and episodes of long ago. It is a privilege to be allowed to share their memories and to pray with them.

Other aspects of my role are to remember birthdays, anniversaries (sad or happy) or just to make contact with a card or telephone call to show they are being thought of and to make sure they still feel a part of the St Andrew’s family.
